Scott Spiltz: vegan, který utekl před rakovinou
Veganští běžci dobývají obálky magazínů… Kdo se objeví na obálce prosincového čísla Runners´s World, celosvětového běžeckého magazínu s desátkami let tradice? Osmatřicetiletý Scott Spiltz, který je přes dvacet let veganem a celoživotním běžcem. Právě vyhrál velkou soutěž o místo na obálce vyhlašovanou tímto časopisem a zvítězil v konkurenci více než 2.400 lidí.
„Nejsem jenom „běžec,“ jsem závodní běžec. Na dlouhé tratě. Veganský, závodní běžec na dlouhé tratě. Asi bych mohl přidat víc popisu, ale tohle docela sedí,“ říká o sobě Scott, který běhá od šesti let. Tehdy ho máma vzala jako diváka na komunitní závod na pět kilometrů. Scott za ní po startu běžel celou trasu… Běhal celou střední a vysokou, pak si dál 13 let pauzu. K běhání se vrátil v roce 2007. Jeho maratonský rekord je 2:25:55 z roku 2009
Na svůj největší závod ale vyrazil teprve nedávno: Scott trpí vzácnou formou zhoubné rakoviny břicha. Za poslední rok podstoupil dvě operace a chemoterapii (19 infůzí a přes tisíc tabletek). „Pokud mě chce rakovina zabít, musí mě nejdřív chytit,“ říká Scott, který i s rakovinou běhá 150 kilometrů týdně. Mezi operacemi běhal týdně 100 kilometrů.
„Před rokem jsem byl po tom, čemu se říká „matka všech operací,“ naživu jen díky přístrojům, ale každý den jsem se ozdravoval a sílil,“ dodává a pokračuje: „Od doby, kdy mi sdělili diagnózu, pro mě nebylo nic důležitějšího než běhání, které ve mně udržuje naději a nejspíš mě i drží naživu.“
